A cat stranded 90ft from the ground atop a viaduct has been rescued by firefighters and the RSPCA – but only after a lengthy three-day wait.

A passer-by had spotted the animal in Stockport and they alerted the charity – who unfortunately didn’t have the right apparatus to get the lonesome pet down.

The fire service, with the aid of a cage and a cherry picker, managed to coax the cat down eventually, despite the creature being a tad reluctant.

RSPCA inspector Heather Morris said: ‘He was 90ft off the ground and 5ft down from the top of the viaduct so it was a very difficult situation, made more difficult by the fact that it was… Read the full story

A pony had hair pulled from its mane and tail before it was dragged into a canal and left to drown.

RSPCA inspectors who examined the dead pony say they found clumps of its hair on the ground as well as drag marks leading to the water’s edge.

They believe the animal made a desperate struggle for life as it was dumped in the freezing water at Rugby, Warwickshire.

Dog walkers made the shocking discovery in the canal running between Brinklow and Newbold.

This is the heartbreaking moment a puppy is dumped outside the gates of an RSPCA centre before its owner drives off.

A silver Renault car is seen driving up to the gate before the driver leans across to open the back door and makes the puppy get out.

The driver then wheel-spins off as the young Staffordshire bull terrier pup desperately tries to follow the vehicle.

It was only later, when RSPCA staff in Birmingham checked the CCTV, that they saw the incident in full.

A scaffolder picked up a dying cat by its tail and flung it across a road, because he was annoyed at having to wait in a traffic jam.

Sick of waiting while drivers tended to the cat after it was knocked down, the man left the cab of his truck and tossed the pet on to a roadside verge – where it died a few minutes later.

When motorists tried to stop him from leaving, he mounted the kerb in his scaffolding lorry to get passed queuing vehicles.

A monkey in a rabbit suit… vegetables masquerading as rodents… insulting dogs with ‘rude’ names.

April Fool’s Day may have been and gone, but the RSPCA is expecting a lot more silliness before its ‘busiest year ever’ is over.

The animal welfare charity has revealed some of the most ridiculous calls received by its 24-hour cruelty line in a bid to discourage time-wasters.

So far this year the organisation has dealt with reports of a monkey dressed in a rabbit suit (which a caller demanded officers investigate), a ‘sick rat’ in a woman’s kitchen which later turned out to… Read the full story

A trainee solicitor was jailed today for leaving her dog to starve to death, locked in a kitchen, while she went away.

Katy Gammon failed to visit boxer Roxy while staying with her mother close by – trapping the animal without food and water.

Her pet lay undiscovered for ten weeks until a neighbour saw swarming flies through the kitchen window and called police.

When RSPCA officers were called to the Bristol address on November 3 last year, the dog’s body was so decomposed they needed a shovel to scrape it up.

‘On arriving at the address, officers said they felt physically sick,’ said… Read the full story

Twitchers beware – a giant bird on the loose in the English countryside is not one to be messed with.

The South American rhea – which stands at 1.8m (6ft) tall and can run at 40mph – has startled bird spotters after escaping from its home last month.

And with 15cm (6in) long claws that it can use to disembowel humans, it is one bird you wouldn’t want to see when it’s angry, say animal experts.

Some people are just plain mean.

Everyone loves cats, right? Or at least we thought they did, but it turns out there’s a weird sort of cat racism sweeping the country.

The RSPCA have reported that 70 per cent of the 1,000 cats they’re currently looking after are black. And the apparent reason for this? Well, according to an RSPCA spokesman it’s because black cats don’t photograph particularly well. Ridiculous, right?

And the RSPCA is not alone in noticing this trend. Ronnie McMillen from The Millwood Cat Rescue Centre in Edwalton told MailOnline: ‘We have had a lot of… Read the full story
